This module builds on work done previously in the first year in Introduction to Health & Social Care; concepts of health & well-being and during the second year as part of Advancing the Health of the population: Understanding Public Health. This module aims to enable students to use and build on the knowledge and understanding gained in these modules to analyse and critically evaluate current and emerging responses to key challenges facing the health and social care sector. The modules therefore aims to ;

• provide a critical understanding of the emerging issues in contemporary health and social care at both policy and practice levels.

• consider the relationship between the social determinants of health and policy and practice responses to health and social care issues

• critically examine implicit theoretical perspectives underpinning key approaches to tackling health inequalities.

• develop understanding of a range of theoretical perspectives related to health creation and initiatives to tackle health inequalities; social prescribing, asset-based approaches, community development.

• consider the practical and ethical implications for the health and social workforce of current and emerging responses to a range issues

Challenges of technological advances, developments in genetics, non-communicable diseases, financial constraints/management & ageing population, vulnerability & safeguarding

application of the following in response to identified challenges;

• the social determinants of health

• typology of initiatives to tackle social inequalities in health –
o strengthening individuals, strengthening communities, improving living and working conditions and associated access to essential services, and promoting healthy macro-policies

• Traditional vs emerging models of care
o social prescribing, asset-based psychosocial, community engagement and community development approaches

• Leadership and [change] management necessary to manage these challenges

• Re-evaluating ethics, the changing mandate of the caring professions, values-based approaches, discourse ethics

Learning Outcomes LO1 - 5

The use of case studies, scenarios and narratives will be at the heart of the delivery of this module. This will allow students to revisit more detailed versions of scenarios presented previously in the course and also examine the same scenarios in other concurrent modules. A range of teaching methods will be used throughout this module to address the material presented: lectures, presentations, seminars, workshops and discussions, both face to face and online. These sessions will provide background coverage on topics under discussion and interactive learning. Students will be required to read set texts and articles and to discuss these in classes and seminars. Additional resources will be available online via WebLearn. Module staff will be available to provide face-to-face, telephone, and email support to students during and outside timetabled sessions.

On completion of this module students will be able to:

1. demonstrate in-depth understanding of key challenges currently facing the health and social care sector

2. apply in-depth knowledge of the social determinants of health to demonstrate detailed understanding of reasons for inequalities in health

3. critically evaluate the effectiveness of the categories within the typology of initiatives to tackle social inequalities in health.

4. critically evaluate current and emerging responses to issues in contemporary health and social care at both policy and practice levels and propose improvements to these

5. utilise a detailed understanding of developments in health and social care policy and practice to identify the attitudinal and leadership implications of these for the workforce

The assessment is designed to test the student's ability to evaluate issues influencing theory, policy and practice developments in Public Health and Social Care. To assess achievement against the module aims and learning outcomes, there will be two assessments. The first assessment is an oral group presentation addressing a health and social care issue and intervention policy/strategy. The second assessment is a 3000 - word essay critically appraising a health and social care policy for its use of health creation approaches to tackle social inequalities in health.
