Module summary
This module provides opportunities for students to develop their understanding of key issues in mental health practice and policy, as well as critically discuss relevant theoretical and conceptual issues relating to mental health.
The module aims to:
- Develop understanding of key concepts in mental health and well-being
- Develop awareness of mental health diagnoses and implications of these to the individual, health services, and wider society
- Develop knowledge of key policy and practice issues in mental health through
- Provide opportunities to critically evaluate and reflect upon models and theories of mental health and well-being
Syllabus
The module will address the following topics in turn:
- Mental health and mental illness
- Stigma and discrimination in mental health
- Key explanatory models of mental health and well-being
- Mental health policy: opportunities and challenges
- Mental health practice: current challenges
- Values, attitudes and ethical concerns in mental health provision, practice and policy
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
A range of teaching methods will be used throughout this module: lectures, seminars, workshops, activities and discussions on relevant case studies. The module will also apply the flipped-class method, where students will be required to read set texts or other information, and to discuss these in classes and seminars. Additional resources will be available online via WebLearn. Module staff will be available to provide face-to-face, telephone, and email support to students during and outside timetabled sessions.
Learning outcomes
Upon completion of the module, the student will be able to:
1. Understand and discuss concepts related to mental health and well-being
2. Apply and critically discuss mental health models and theories in relation to relevant case studies
3. Critically analyse and evaluate mental health policy
4. Identify and discuss current challenges in mental health provision and practice
5. Critically reflect upon the role of values, attitudes, and ethics in mental health provision, practice and policy
