Module summary

This Module critically studies the interconnectedness of key challenges of human development and human health, and health and social care across nations within global contexts. You will have an opportunity to build up a knowledge base on human global health that starts with looking at the key global concepts of human development, to global measurements of health and then to the key global factors that affect human health, and health and social care, and cause health inequalities and inequities across the nations. You will then be able to study some of the global milestone improvements in global health, including health systems performance, healthcare quality and safety, and control and eradication of some of the key causes of global mortality and morbidity. The Module will also give you an opportunity to critically study global health policy and key global health actors, and the complexities of global health interventions to improve human health across the nations.

Therefore, the Module aims are to:
• introduce and build a critical knowledge base of global health concepts, theories and measurements that can be used and applied when analysing global health problems around the world.
• critique the key global factors that affect human health, health and social care, mortality and morbidity, global health inequalities and inequities.
• evaluate the contribution of global health milestone improvements and contemporary health systems performance on human health around the world.
• assess the influence of global health actors, global health policy and the complexities of global health interventions on global human health.
• analyse past and contemporary global health case-studies and draw implications from them for future research, policy and practice in global health.
• develop and enhance graduate attributes of global citizenship that enable you to apply global health knowledge to local health problems (‘think globally for local actions’).

Syllabus

The indicative syllabus of the Module include the following topics:

• Concepts and Theories in Global Health [LO1]
• Global Health Measurements [LO2]
• The Dynamics of Global Health Patterns and the Global Burden of Disease [LO3, LO6]
• Global Socio-Demographic, Environmental and Health Transitions [LO2, LO3, LO6]
• Global Health Determinants and Health Inequalities and Inequities [LO3, LO6]
• Improving Global Health Systems Performance [LO4, LO6]
• Global Movement on Healthcare Quality and Safety [LO4, LO5, LO6]
• Experiencing the Global Health and Social Care Workforce Crisis [LO5, LO6]
• Global Health Policy, Governance and Social Justice [LO5, LO6]
• Global Health Case-Studies: Understanding and Managing Global Epidemics [LO5, LO6]
• Global Health Ethics, Contemporary Achievements and Challenges in Global Health [LO3, LO4. LO5. LO6]

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

You will learn through blended learning which will combine classroom and online activities. Classroom learning activities will consist of the following:
• lectures
• direct and interactive teaching
• small group workshops and seminars
• video and case-study analyses
• assessment tutorials

Online learning is mostly directed self-study and activities will include:
• the use of podcasts and videos
• forum discussions
• group assessment preparation
• weekly recommended reading assignments.
You will have an opportunity for reflective learning from both formal and informal learning on a weekly basis. Content analysis of global health case-studies will require you to reflect on how these can be explained by the concepts and theories you will study on the Module. Through the assessments and the case-studies, you will also be required to reflect on the importance of key factors of successes and failures and how the ‘global’ play into these and apply to other global health scenarios. A key aspect of reflective learning you will meet on the Module is the application of the notion of ‘think globally for local solutions’. This will require you, particularly for the first assessment, to reflect on how global health actors, global health policy and wider global circumstances influence local health solutions. You will also be required to apply the analyses to your own practice and consider their implications for research and policy in global health, and on health and social care in general. Thus, the global health case-studies and the wider learning on the Module will provide opportunities to reflect on how to transfer gained knowledge to your own work or other global health situations. A guest practitioner from the field will help to reflect on the practical application of material learned on the module.

Learning outcomes

Upon successful completion of the Module, you will be able to:
 Critically evaluate the key concepts and theories in global health and apply them to the real world [LO1]
 Critically evaluate global health measurements and apply them to human development in order to understand the differences in health outcomes across nations [LO2]
 Critically analyse the Global Burden of Disease (GBD) and the global factors causing health inequalities and inequities between and across the nations [LO3]
 Identify and critique key and milestone improvements in global health and health systems around the world [LO4]
 Critically synthesise and evaluate information about key global health actors and the influence of global health policy interventions on selected global health case-studies, reflecting on their importance to research, policy and practice in global health [LO5]
 Demonstrate attributes of global citizenship by being able to develop local health solutions informed by a critical evaluation of global health circumstances [LO6]

Assessment strategy

Learning on the Module will be assessed by two assessment activities as follows:

Summative Assessment 1 – A Concept / Infographic Map Group Presentation of a Local-Global Health Case-Study
This will assess LOs 5 and 6. You will work in a group with other students to look at a case-study of a health issue that has a global context but addressed at a local / national level and prepare a concept /infographic map as a group presentation. This will require you to consider and reflect on how the influence of global health actors and global health policy and the wider global health circumstances are used to inform local / national solutions and interventions. The group presentation of the concept / infographic map will be done in class in Week 9 and will carry 30% of the total module mark.

Summative Assessment 2 – Group Coursework of a Global Health Portfolio
Based on the concept / infographic map developed for Assessment 1 and will assess LOs 1 to 4. You will have to work in the same group and on the same choose a global health topic / issue of your own interest to write a 3000-word global health portfolio on. The topic / issue could be any one of the issues studied on the scheduled programme or beyond. This could be on global health measurement issues, a developing global health concept, the influence of a key global health factor like health workforce crisis, a challenging global public health condition, a milestone global health improvement or achievement, health systems performance issues and healthcare quality and safety issues. You will be required to reflect critically on the global circumstances of the topic / issue you choose and show its development, related global health challenges, implications and possible solutions.

Formative Assessment – There will be opportunities for an assessment preparation week before the Group Presentation and the group will get formative feedback from the module teaching staff. You will also have an opportunity for formative feedback from the module teaching staff on your 800-word written plan for the Global Health Group ReportPortfolio, Summative Assessment 2.
