Module summary
This module introduces students to the formal characteristic of film in conjunction with key Film Studies critical tools.
The purpose of the first part is to introduce students to matters of film style and meaning such as mise en scene, framing, editing, sound, costumes and tone, enabling students to develop skills of textual analysis.
Students will also learn about key theories such as Star Studies, Authorship and Genre so that you can apply key theoretical models and frameworks to film analysis.
In this module you will:
• Develop and practice skills of close textual analysis of specific film texts
• Develop an understanding of key theoretical approaches to the study of film
• Apply theoretical models and frameworks to film analysis
• Have the opportunity to evaluate different theoretical frameworks
• Develop transferable skills of written communication, planning and presentation and gain feedback on your ability to do this
Syllabus
The module addresses issues of film style such as mise en scene, framing, editing, sound costume and tone in conjunction with key concepts in Film Studies.
These include star studies, authorship and genre, forming a basis for future study through the Film and Television Studies film course.
Students will learn to develop key skills of textual analysis., conduct independent analysis of film texts and develop an understanding of key critical concepts.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The learning and teaching strategy in this module combines the introduction of key academic skills for students of film such as textual analysis, referring to secondary sources in academic writing so that students acquire the necessary knowledge to move to the next level:

Formative and summative feedback is provided after each coursework, in written form both on WebLearn and in-class after the textual analysis.
