Module summary

The field of web design is ever- evolving with new practices and methods. Adopting a mobile- first approach, this module will provide students with a detailed understanding of the contexts and practice of website design. It will introduce them to the website design conventions around accessibility and usability standards.
The module will examine different web scripting languages, web design platforms and the web design process.

The module aims to identify the nature of the website design and mobile as a medium and introduces a range of design concepts. It also focuses on a range of technical skills including working with content management systems, developing website design and researching user experience for website design.

This module aims to:

  • To examine website design methodologies, trends and techniques, developing practical skills in web design
  • To enable students to design a responsive web design project
  • To encourage innovative design on the web for real or fictitious clients
  • To conform to legal frameworks and principles around designing accessibly for a wide range of users

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

This module will be delivered through a combination of modes of delivery, including formal lectures, seminars, workshops, and individual coursework. The mixed-mode module delivery will be used to encourage a supportive environment for individual and peer-group learning. A blended learning strategy will be employed to enhance the learning experience, facilitate communication between students and tutors and develop collaboration among students. The Virtual Learning Environment (VLE: Weblearn) will be used as a platform to support online activities including evaluation of online resources, access to materials and electronic reading packs. The VLE will also be used to facilitate assessment and related feedback, as well as a tool to integrate useful online learning materials provided by research institutions, academic publications, professional organisations and other relevant sources.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:

Deliver a professional‑standard presentation that communicates website research and planning documentation in response to a real or fictitious client brief (LO1).

Critically apply established principles of accessibility and usability to design and develop a website, demonstrating selection of appropriate concepts, paradigms and methodologies. (LO2)

Critically analyse and employ relevant trends, techniques and design contexts to the creative design and development of web interfaces (LO3).
