Module summary

This module provides the foundations for the research analysis and activity which you will pursue throughout your degree program. You will develop the skills required to read, interpret and analyse research in a variety of forms. This module also introduces you to methods of data analysis using computer software. You will enhance your planning, preparation, academic writing styles, referencing and resourcing. With regard to data analysis, the aim of the module is to enable you to apply statistical techniques to data, as part of your other studies as well as in a more general work environment.

The aims of this module are aligned with the qualification descriptors within the Quality Assurance Agency’s Framework for Higher Education Qualifications.

Understanding of both qualitative and quantitative data collection methods (LO1, LO2, LO3)
Basic mathematical and statistical skills and applications to research and data analysis (LO3)

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The students will be taught using a variety of teaching methods including:

• Lectures
• Seminars
• Tutorials
• Practicals in IT studios
• On-line tests and quizzes

Lectures will be used to present and develop core material, practicals will be used to demonstrate and allow students to apply concepts taught in lectures/tutorials, tutorial sessions will be used to support the lecture material and allow the students to engage in the material using IT and problem-solving skills. Directed learning will be used to develop an understanding beyond the material given in lectures. It will include exercises set within the lecture and tutorial sessions and involve using the web and library resources.

Reflective study will be encouraged across the year, specifically in the writing skills development throughout the module.

Learning outcomes

LO1: Demonstrate an understanding of the different types of sports science research and some of the issues surrounding good quality research.
LO2: Undertake research and abstraction of information from written and electronic sources and utilise a standard format to cite the sources of such material
LO3: Develop mathematical and statistical skills required to enable basic research and data analysis, using appropriate IT packages

Assessment strategy

Online test (50%): Students will answer a series of questions online about research resources and statistics. This test will be completed within class time in week 8.

This online test will consist of MCQ and short answer questions and enable students to demonstrate their knowledge and understanding of simple research related skills. It also enables some reflection of what it means to them and their studies. This knowledge is essential and transferable for use throughout their degree studies.

Coursework: Poster Package (50%); In small groups, students will prepare a poster based on a given research question.  Individually they will also provide  a summary of one article used in the preparation of the poster.

This coursework will provide students with the opportunity to work with their peers, developing key team-working skills. They will analyse simple data and present it in a professional manner, integrating their statistical analysis skills. They will also use peer-reviewed research to support their research demonstrating their evaluation skills.
