Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The Principles of Effective Coaching module is structured to provide a balanced mix of theoretical knowledge and practical application, with the module delivered through dynamic lectures and applied coaching practice.
Lectures will cover the essential theoretical foundations of coaching, including the history and evolution of coaching, development of coaching philosophies, pedagogical models, and ethical considerations. These sessions will be interactive, incorporating case studies, group discussions, and multimedia resources to enhance your understanding of the material. Lectures will also explore the use of digital coaching tools, providing you with the knowledge to integrate technology into your coaching practices.
The other half of the module focuses on applied coaching practice, where you will have the opportunity to implement the theories and models discussed in lectures. Practical sessions will involve designing and delivering coaching sessions, utilising activity-based exercises, and employing effective communication strategies. You will practice health and safety and emergency procedures, explore inclusive coaching methods, and engage in reflective practice to continuously improve your skills. These sessions will take place in simulated environments, offering you the chance to apply your learning in a variety of contexts.
Reflective learning is embedded throughout the module. You will develop an ongoing reflective attitude based on your experiences during both lectures and practical sessions, facilitating self-assessment and personal development. This reflective practice will help you critically evaluate your growth as a coach, set personal goals, and develop a deeper, more nuanced coaching philosophy.
