Module summary
This module introduces you to the responses of tissues and organs to acute and chronic exercise training. You will learn about the theoretical underpinnings of fundamental tests used including maximal oxygen uptake incremental exercise tests and blood lactate analysis and the so-called threshold concept and these will be accompanied with relevant lab testing experience.
Other key concepts addressed are endurance, acid base balance, cardiovascular, respiratory and high intensity intermittent training.
Prior learning requirements
Prerequisites SP4051 and SP4061
Available for Study Abroad? YES
Syllabus
Cardiovascular aspects of exercise: control and regulation of heart and circulation at rest and during exercise. (LO1, LO2)
Respiratory aspects of exercise: effects of exercise on the dynamics of gas exchange and blood gas transport. (LO1, LO2)
Acute and chronic adaptations to aerobic endurance and acid-base balance during exercise (LO1, LO2)
Measurement of resting and incremental exercise oxygen uptake (LO1, LO3)
Measurement of blood lactate and rest and during an incremental step test (LO1, LO3).
Testing of responses to high intensity intermittent and continuous exercise protocols (LO1,LO2, LO3).
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The basic structure of teaching and learning will comprise theory-driven lectures supported by tutorials and lab practical sessions. Lectures will cover acute and chronic physiological responses to exercise and the theoretical basis for test selection. Lab practical sessions offer students opportunities to perform physiological measurements during exercise and to develop the ability to implement a variety of performance tests. Vocational skills and employability will be emphasised when performance evaluation skills are developed and assessed. Virtual exercise physiology lab sessions will be made available to reinforce the practical component of the module as well as underlying theoretical concepts.
Online quizzes will be used to provide purely formative assessment. Written feedback will be given for the summatively-assessed coursework items. Oral feedback from the written exams will be given in a following seminar session and individually on request. This approach allows for summative feedback throughout the course of the module. It also allows the integrated theory and practical core of the syllabus to be separated into two separate items of unseen assessment.
Reading material to cover the entire module and relevant to each lecture session will be made available and referenced in class.
Learning outcomes
LO1: Understand the acute and chronic responses to exercise of the major physiological systems and the interactions between these responses.
LO2: Understand the relevance and contribution of aerobic metabolism to sport and exercise.
LO3: Collect reliable physiological and performance measurements during exercise and report the results appropriately.
