Module summary

Building on the theory laid down in Sociology of Effective Coaching and Teaching (Autumn Level 5) and Advanced Delivery of Coaching Practice (Spring Level 5); within this module you will facilitate an awareness of how coaching and teaching pedagogy interacts with the social environment. The links between socialisation and sporting performance at a participatory level and/or a competitive level will be explored. Theoretical aspects will be based on the critical appraisal of advanced coaching related theory and research and a range of current issues, topical sporting features and professional developments. The module will provoke thought and consideration with regard to the role of sport and exercise within the modern-day social structure. The module is designed to enhance students’ critical analysis and independence of thought regarding sports coaching and develop skills of self-awareness, social awareness, self-management and social skills within the context of sports coaching and/or teaching.
An appreciation of practical coaching and/or teaching skills will be an integral part of the module structure.

Syllabus

Critical reflection on current coaching and teaching trends (LO3)
Values, ethics and morals in modern-day coaching and teaching (LO1)
Philosophy and mindset in effective coaching and teaching (LO3)
Experiential learning through active observational practice (LO4, LO2)

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module will be delivered through a series of lectures, workshops and tutorial sessions. Experiential learning will take place through practical coaching and/or observation of good coaching practice. Through individual negotiation it may be possible for coaching observation to take place during the summer vacation following the second year as opposed to the normal practice of during the third year of study. PDP related skills of self-reflection will be developed through critical reflection and critical evaluation of coaching sessions.

Formative feedback is provided on a weekly basis within lecture, workshops, and tutorial sessions: this does not contribute to the final summative assessment. Students are encouraged to present their critical evaluations to the group as the year progresses. In this way they receive both peer and lecturer feedback, which may be used to help construct the logbook, complete the briefing paper, and poster presentation.

Learning outcomes

LO 1: Appraise advanced coaching or teaching issues
LO 2: Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication with colleagues and performers
LO 3: Critically reflect on coaching or teaching practice
LO 4: Create and/or justify the prescription of training plans with due regard to issues of ethics, gender, age and culture

Assessment strategy

The assessment section of the module consists of two assessment parts.
Assessment (001). Students will prepare a written piece based on a relevant sporting issue of their own choice which has current implications on the coaching or teaching of sport at any level. The written piece (1000 words) will be followed by an individual presentation where a verbal viewpoint of the sporting implications is delivered (10 minutes). Written and verbal parts will be equally weighted. The assessments will be submitted in teaching Week 10, with the presentations delivered in Weeks 11 and 12.

Assessment (002). Students will construct and maintain a Logbook of hours spent coaching/teaching or making considered observation of coaching/teaching practice. The completed number of Logbook hours will be submitted in Teaching Week 15 along with a written reflective piece centred on personal development as a result of the practice or observation undertaken. Logbook hours will total (20 hrs) and the reflective piece will be (1000 words).
