Module summary

The module promotes the refinement of advanced practical coaching skills and will make the final links between the culmination of the degree programme and the intended employment market following graduation. Students will make practical steps in the environment of personal development in coaching or teaching by planning and engaging with relevant and recognised personal development short courses or programmes. Students will be guided in selecting areas which will contribute to, and optimise, their employment opportunities on graduation They will also learn to develop skills required to promote their own coaching or teaching philosophy and pedagogy within that employment market. Students will be able to choose their own individual development areas, selecting both areas to progress and areas to analyse. This will allow the individual to both exhibit their own personal strengths within coaching and teaching, as well as having the opportunity to develop other sections of their personal make-up, hence developing a stronger, more-rounded graduate.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module will be delivered through a series of lectures, workshops and tutorial sessions. Experiential learning will take place through practical coaching and/or observation of good coaching practice. Through individual negotiation it may be possible for coaching observation to take place during the summer vacation following the second year as opposed to the normal practice of during the third year of study. PDP related skills of self-reflection will be developed through critical reflection and critical evaluation of coaching sessions.

Formative feedback is provided on a weekly basis within lecture, workshops, and tutorial sessions: this does not contribute to the final summative assessment. Students are encouraged to present their critical evaluations to the group as the year progresses. In this way they receive both peer and lecturer feedback, which may be used to help construct the logbook, complete the briefing paper, and poster presentation.

Learning outcomes

LO 1: Identify, design and promote a sports or exercise-based initiative.
LO 2: Demonstrate appropriate and effective communication within a sport and exercise environment.
LO 3: Critically assess personal development needs within the coaching/teaching or sports development context.
LO 4: Reflect on learning derived from a personal development programme.

Assessment strategy

The assessment section of the module consists of two assessment parts.
Assessment (001). Committee Briefing Paper. Students will prepare a written piece based on a relevant sporting initiative, which they will design and promote, as if delivering to sports committee. The intended panel could be a sports club committee, sporting facility management team or school board; depending on the individual case. The written briefing (500 words) will be followed by an individual presentation in order to promote the initiative (10 minutes). Written and verbal parts will be equally weighted. The assessments will be submitted in Teaching Week 11, with the presentations delivered in Week 12.

Assessment (002). Students will construct and maintain a Logbook of hours spent in personal development. The personal development may take in a widely ranged format dependent on the individual circumstances. PD courses or programmes in any area of coaching, teaching or sports development will be acceptable once relevance is agreed. The completed number of evidenced Logbook hours will be submitted in Teaching Week 15 along with a written reflective piece which will consider analysis of personal development derived from the programmes. Logbook hours will total (20 hrs) and the reflective piece will be (1000 words).
