Module summary
This module aims to introduce students to current policies, theories and practices of language learning in a variety of educational settings with a particular focus on the demands and logistics of multilingual educational contexts. It aims to equip learners with a robust insight into learning languages and developing skills to teach or work in language learning related sectors.

The Module aims to:
Develop students’ understanding of the processes of language teaching and learning in the context of multilingual and inclusive framework.
Extend students understanding of the relationship between language, culture and identity.
Look critically at the relationship between language, power and pedagogy.
Develop students’ understanding of the theories associated with second language acquisition, second language teaching and bilingualism.
Develop students’ understanding of language learning strategies for different learning contexts;
Develop students’ awareness of the impact of digital technologies on language learning

• Critical overview of UK educational language policies
• Multilingualism
• Second Language Acquisition theories
• Second language Teaching theories (Communicative language teaching; Task based language teaching, Content and Language Integrated Learning)
• Learning languages in the digital age
• Learner autonomy and language learning strategies
• Experiencing and reflecting on language teaching
• Preparing for language teaching
Learning and teaching
This module will be delivered within a blended learning approach which will include lectures, seminars, online enquiry and collaborative learning as well as work related learning (where possible). Students will be invited to reflect throughout the module through the use of an online reflective learning journal and will be able to develop their interest for particular areas of relevant interest.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
LO1: Analyse and make informed use of research on a wide range of educational issue related to language teaching and learning.
LO2: Develop an understanding of multiculturalism, inclusive language practices and theories associated with these.
LO3: Develop their skills and understanding of language teaching and learning though blended learning strategies for the digital age
LO4 Develop their existing skills and knowledge to feel confident about working in a language learning environment in an educational context or beyond.
Assessment strategy
The assessment instruments for this module consist in an individual reflective learning journal in which students will be expected to reflect upon key elements of the course on a regular basis. Students are also expected to undertake some further research on a related issue and to present their work through the medium of an oral presentation followed by an essay / report.
