1. Enhance students’ understanding of the concepts and practices of Community Development
2. Enable students to develop a sound understanding of the values and commitments of Community Development
3. Develop students' understanding of the different models of Community Development located within an anti –discriminatory and anti- oppressive practice framework
4. Increase students’ knowledge and understanding of the process of change and transformation
5. Enable students critically to analyse case studies of Community Development Work in local, national and global contexts
6. Enhance students’ ability to plan. commission, monitor and evaluate Community Development activities and projects

4. Community Development and anti-discriminatory and anti-oppressive practice
5. Community Development: historical and international perspectives
6. Community Development in political, policy, economic and social context
7. Community Development and Reflective Practice
8. Power and Empowerment
9. Community Development and the process of change and transformation
10. Skills in Community Development work with emphasis on developing, sustaining and encouraging autonomy in groups, inclusive, participatory strategies for identifying and meeting needs
11. Identifying and gathering resources
12. Occupational Standards for Community Development Work
13. Case Studies of Community Development in local, national and global Contexts
14. Monitoring and Evaluation of Community Development Work
Learning and teaching
Lectures encouraging students to introduce their own knowledge from their studies and experience; class discussions,; experiential learning through exercises; case studies from visiting speakers; reflection on past and present paid and unpaid work experience
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module students will:
1. Understand clearly the principles and practices of community development including different definitions of community
2. Understand the issues of values and identity from personal, social and professional perspectives
3. Gain a critical insight of the origin and growth of community development together with a sound understanding of the various models and concepts which underpin professional practice
4. Develop a clear grasp of the process of change and transformation
5. Have a wide range of advanced knowledge and skills which are congruent with their level of studies.
6. Understand the role of contemporary institutions in community development
Assessment strategy
This module will be assessed on the basis of:
1. A report describing, planning or analysing and evaluating a community development project or initiative against recognised standards. Students will need to negotiate a topic relevant to the themes and issues outlined in the the syllabus with their module tutor (4,000 words) due in week 14.
2. Learning logs demonstrating students ability to reflect, explore independently and apply learning due in week 14.
