Module summary
High quality evaluation is achieved through the collection, analysis, interpretation and presentation of evidence. This module introduces the range of skills and techniques available and suitable to a variety of policy, programme and project evaluation designs.
Module aims
The aims of this module are to:
1. Provide an overview of techniques which support data collection, analysis and presentation for evaluation
2. Develop an understanding of the principal approaches and forms of evaluation
3. Gain an appreciation of the social, political and ethical contexts of evaluation

- Secondary data analysis
- Randomised Control Trials; quasi-experimental methods and their alternatives
- Designing and analysing performance indicators and data
- Survey/questionnaire design & piloting
- Interviewing – design & practice
- Focus Group – design & practice
- Observation & ethnographic techniques
- Visual tools for data collection
- Virtual tools for data collection
- Data Analysis
- Reporting and disseminating evaluation findings
Learning and teaching
This module will be delivered as a five day block including presentations, workshop activities and guest lectures. A skills and techniques course, students will be required to participate in practical exercises which will help to build their skills in conducting policy, programme and project evaluations.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:
- Outline the elements of evaluation design
- Discuss and appraise the links between evaluation and the contexts within which it takes place
- select appropraite approaches and methods to address evaluation purposes and questions
- Describe and critically assess a range of skills relevant to the conduct of evaluation
Assessment strategy
Plan and pilot of a selected data collection tool for an evaluation including a critical review of the method and its reliability in context.
