Module summary
Covers finance and budgeting within a fitness facility. Includes marketing skills and how to increase client numbers in a gym environment. This module will allow the students to explore setting up a personal training business with the view to working both in house and training clients externally.
Module aims
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate knowledge and critical understanding of the running of a personal training business.
2. Understand the approach to developing an existing client base, including different marketing theories in order to apply them in an employment context.
3. Be able to market themselves by producing their own electronic marketing. This should use established techniques to propose solutions arising from analysis of the benefits of this type of marketing.
4. Improving learning and performance appropriate to level 5: agree targets and plan how these will be met over an extended period of time
Syllabus
The content will allow students to complete mission statements and part business plans for their in house and external personal training businesses. There will be retention strategies and the legal requirements for running a business in the UK. Marketing will form a large part of the teaching delivery, with social media and the internet included. The students will be shown how to set targets in the form of business projections and methods on how to achieve these targets.

Assessment strategy
Coursework will be in the form of an essay and web site detailing the personal trainer’s marketing skills (100%, learning outcomes 1-4). A mark of 40% or more must be obtained in order to pass the unit. The essay will include marketing, personal trainer payment and business plan projections.
