Module summary

This module is intended to develop first aid practical skills in regards to both basic and advanced first aid. The module aims to develop on your previous experiences in first aid and/or introduce the principle of first aid and trauma management which enable you to deal with situations in different in a sport and exercise context safely and effectively. The module provides students with advanced theoretical knowledge, including contemporary issues in sports trauma.

Syllabus

Physiological theory underpinning the use of trauma management techniques (LO3)
Principles of basic life support and its use in a variety of sport and exercise situations (LO1)
Sports trauma management including, but not limited to; trauma and wound management, equipment removal, referral and return to play principles (LO2 & 3)
Principles of trauma management in relation to adult and paediatric care (LO1 & 2)
Understanding of, but not limited to, accepted guidelines, policies and pre event planning in line with current standards for first/ emergency aid (LO1, 2 & 3)
Use of taping and main techniques to support sporting injuries (LO2)
Thermal modalities for soft tissue injuries (LO2)
Gait re-training and the use ambulatory aids (LO2)

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Students will be provided with the opportunity to acquire knowledge of the subject material through teacher-led activities in the form of lectures and tutorials and practical’s. Students' ability to seek, handle and interpret information will be encouraged through directed reading with some specific distance learning developments, access to the websites of professional bodies, and other learning resources. Students will work in groups on aspects of practical application and as individuals. Study responsibilities are articulated in the Student Charter which is available via the University web site.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Demonstrate safe and effective basic life support
2. Demonstrate safe and effective trauma management in a sport and exercise context
3. Critically appraise and discuss theoretical and contemporary issues underpinning sports trauma management

Assessment strategy

Formative feedback opportunities are available throughout the scheduled teaching. Summatively, students will be required to demonstrate their practical skills in two practical based assessments. The first practical assessment will aim to assess the students’ basic first aid skills via a 10 minute competency based exam (LO1). The second practical assessment will assess the students’ ability to deal with a trauma based practical and will include a viva to assess the students’ theoretical understanding. This is done via a 15 minute scenario-based exam (LO2 & 3). There is also a 2000 word coursework component in which students will discuss a contemporary issue in sports trauma (LO3).
Students will be required to attend a minimum of 80% of the practical sessions in this module in order to successfully complete the module.
