Module summary
This module is intended to serve as an introduction to examination and assessment of sports and exercise injuries. You will cover core theoretical knowledge regarding common injuries sustained to soft tissues, as a result of sport and exercise. You will learn about the mechanism of injury, aetiology, signs and symptoms, diagnosis and general treatment approaches for frequently sustained musculoskeletal disorders, as well as the purpose of commonly performed components of a clinical assessment. You will also learn the practical competencies a Sports Therapist performs in a clinical setting with regards to an examination and assessment.

Syllabus
Introduction to theoretical principles of clinical examination and assessment techniques (LO 2)
Practical application of objective clinical examination techniques including; effective patient handling and communication, active and passive joint movements, manual muscle tests and accurate palpation of specific anatomical structures (LO3)
Soft tissue injury – pathophysiology, causes, types, healing and possible complications (LO1)
Fundamentals of clinical note taking and legalities within sports therapy (LO2)
The role of a Sports Therapist in clinical environments and as part of a multi-disciplinary team (LO1, LO2)
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The students will be taught using a variety of teaching methods including; lectures, practicals, seminars, online videos, small/large group work, role playing and on-line quizzes.
The formal lectures will cover the theoretical underpinning of the concepts of Sports Therapy practice covered in this module. This underpinning will then be applied and discussed in the practical sessions.
Weblearn will be used extensively to provide the students with appropriate learning materials, as well as online quizzes and video resources to enhance students' learning and engagement.
Learning outcomes
LO 1: Demonstrate appropriate theoretical understanding of musculoskeletal disorders which are sustained commonly in sport and exercise
LO 2: Demonstrate appropriate theoretical understanding of the purpose of a clinical examination and assessment
LO 3: Demonstrate safe and effective patient handling of a clinical examination and assessment
Assessment strategy
Examination and assessment practical (15 minutes); This will assess the students’ ability to apply the principles of an effective clinical examination and assessment to the upper limb, lower limb and spine
Written exam (30 minutes); This will assess the student’s theoretical underpinning of the foundations of Sports Therapy, including the understanding of common sports and exercise injuries and the purpose of a clinical examination and assessment
Tutorial Attendance; Students will be required to attend a minimum of 80% of the tutorial sessions in this module in order to successfully complete the module
Students are also required to pass the practical exam in order to pass the module.
