Module summary

In this module, students will start to learn French and will become confident basic users, up to CEFR A1 level.  Students will learn to use the language in familiar contexts through practical class activities, focusing on functional and authentic language use. The module introduces students to grammatical structures and vocabulary, as well as focusing on reading, writing, listening, speaking, communicative and pronunciation skills. Students will also study the cultures of French speaking countries.

This is a 15 credit module taught on a semester basis, with no prior learning required. The module is assessed by a progress test, a listening test and an oral test. The course is structured around class time, autonomous learning and guided WebLearn materials. The module is adaptable to the language abilities of students and can be taught to students studying in different years.

Syllabus

The course is structured around class time, independent learning and guided Weblearn materials. Indicative contents will include:
• Development of listening and speaking skills LO1, LO2
• Development of writing skills LO3
• Development of a basic range of vocabulary and lexis LO1, LO2, LO3
• Acquisition of simple grammatical structures LO1, LO3

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module features 30% of learning through scheduled teaching. It will follow a blended learning approach. Students will study French during class and extend and consolidate this with the use of WebLearn and other online and paper based resources. They will develop autonomous learning skills and language learning strategies. Students will work together and alone, in and out of class and they will receive teacher and peer feedback to enable them to reflect on their learning.

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of this module are calibrated on the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. 
On completing this module, students will be able to:
1. Listening:
Understand simple messages and conversations in French
2. Speaking:
Interact in a simple way in French, ask and answer simple personal questions
3. Use of written language:
Understand simple written texts related to familiar topics.
Write short utterances and notes on familiar topics and situations

Assessment strategy

• The module will be assessed through a progress test, a listening test and an oral test. The progress test will assess learning outcome 3, the listening test will assess learning outcome 1 and oral test will assess learning outcome 2
• Formative assessment supports students in developing for summative assessment.
• Feedback on assessment is timely, constructive and developmental.
• Processes for marking assessments and for moderating marks are clearly articulated and consistently operated by those involved in the assessment process.
