Module summary

In this module students will continue to develop their language skills to become elementary users of Spanish.  Students will learn how to use Spanish in a range of contexts through practical class activities focusing on authentic language use.  The course covers grammatical structures, vocabulary and skills as well as looking at intercultural communication skills and cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries. The course is structured around class time, independent learning and guided Weblearn materials.

Completion of OSL072 OR A1 competence

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

•  To increase students’ linguistic competence in Spanish for all skills towards an elementary level (level A2) of the Common European Framework of Reference);
• To further develop appropriate language learning strategies to encourage effective independent learning of Spanish;
• To develop a further understanding of the cultural contexts in which the language is used
• To enhance student employability and transferable skills

Syllabus

• Further development of oral, reading, listening, writing and communicative skills in Spanish
• Extension and expansion of accurate use of and understanding of a range of lexis
• Development of fluency
• Further development of grammatical accuracy
• Development of cohesion and coherence in speaking and writing

Learning and teaching

Learning and teaching strategies will be delivered through a blended learning approach. Learners will actively participate in individual and group activities in class and independently, using online resources and tools available on WebLearn, as well as paper based materials. They will receive teacher and peer feedback to enable them to reflect on their learning

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of this module are calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.  By the end of the module students should be able to:

 1.
• Understand spoken and written Spanish on topics such as personal and family information, shopping, travel, work
• understand the main point of clear practical messages, announcements, and conversations;
• understand the description of events, feelings and wishes in written and spoken Spanish.

2.
• write simple texts describing experiences, feelings and impressions
• write texts with simple connectors;

3.
• to be able to handle basic social exchanges
• to describe personal circumstances
• to discuss topics such as family, hobby and interests, work, travel and current events
• answer questions and respond to simple statements, maintaining the flow of conversation, including reformulating to aid understanding

Assessment strategy

The module will be assessed through an in class test, a listening test and an oral test. The in class test will assess learning outcomes 1 and 2, the listening will assess learning outcome 1, and the oral test will assess learning outcomes 3 and 4.
