Module summary
• To analyse critically key concepts including racism and ethnicity as well anti-racism, multiculturalism, Islamophobia in order to develop an awareness of their contested nature.
• To look at these issues in a sociological context that explores the meanings ascribed to these terms, their historical origins and key examples where these issues have been or remain important in shaping the social order in Britain.
• To consider the impact of racism on specific communities and groups, including women and national, religious and ethnic groups.
Syllabus
Perspectives and realities LO1, LO2
1. Key concepts: Racism, ethnicity, multiculturalism etc
2. Ethnicity, migration and settlement
3. Ethnic classification, racialisation and national identity
4. Ethnic Mobilisation, ‘Race relations’, Community Relations
5. Multiethnic London
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
Teaching: 10 weekly lectures followed by exercises and reflexive discussion in seminars, based on data and key texts. Learning: Learning is supported by the WebLearn site for the module which includes lecture notes, seminar exercises, newspaper articles and longer articles and links to relevant web sites.
The lecture notes and seminar exercises are used as the initial basis for tackling a topic, but students are encouraged to go beyond these in preparing coursework.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module, students will be able to:
LO1: Identify and describe key concepts, debates and controversies surrounding racism and ethnicity
L02: Identify and analyse contemporary and historical examples of how these concepts play a significant part in shaping the social order.
LO3: Analyse a range of contemporary/historical issues where racism or ethnicity have played important parts in shaping the social order and to utilise their own knowledge and experience to illuminate these discussions.
Assessment strategy
3000 word essay week 14, designed to meet Learning Outcomes 2& 3.
The assessment criteria for the assessments are:
1. Responding to a task precisely and clearly, covering essential points in a logical sequence
2. Conveying an argument, theory or concepts in their own words
3. Demonstrating understanding of the module materials
4. Supporting assertions with evidence and sources
5. Adequate bibliography and referencing
6. Coherent sentence construction, adequate use of English
