Module summary

In this module students will learn to develop higher intermediate language skills and become partly autonomous users of French.  Students will learn how to use French in a range of contexts through practical class activities focusing on authentic language use.  The course covers grammar structures, vocabulary and the four skills.  It also focuses on intercultural communication skills and cultural aspects of French speaking countries. The course is structured around class time, independent learning and guided Weblearn materials.

Completion of OFL073 OR A2/towards B1 competence

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

•  To increase students’ linguistic competence in French in all skills towards a higher intermediate level (level B1 of the Common European Framework of Reference);
• To further develop appropriate language learning strategies to encourage effective independent learning
• To develop a further understanding of the cultural contexts in which French is used
• To enhance student employability and transferable skills

Syllabus

• further development oral, reading, listening, writing and communicative skills to a higher intermediate level in French
• extension and expansion of accurate use of and understanding of a range of lexis
• further development of fluency
further development and extension of grammatical control and accuracy
• development of cohesion and coherence in speaking and writing

Learning and teaching

Learning and teaching strategies will be delivered through a blended learning approach. Learners will actively participate in individual and group activities in class and using online resources and tools available on Weblearn, as well as paper based materials. They will receive teacher and peer feedback to enable them to reflect on their learning.

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of this module are calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.  By the end of the module students should be able to:

• understand the main points of clear messages, announcements, and conversations
• understand texts in limited contexts
• understand the purpose of written communications

• write personal communications and describe experiences and impressions
• write texts with simple connectors

• communicate in tasks on familiar topics and activities
• handle basic social exchanges
• describe personal circumstances and living conditions
• answer questions and respond to statements, maintaining the flow of conversation

Assessment strategy

Learning outcomes 1,2 and 3 will be assessed through a progress test (use of the language, reading and writing), a listening test and an oral test.
