Module summary

This module will introduce students to basic principles of coaching and teaching in a range of areas, which will be critical to development of a true understanding of sports performance and participation. These basic principles will feature sound philosophies in coaching and teaching which will foster a solid basis from which individual pedagogy can be forged over the rest of the year and on to subsequent years of the programme.

In parallel, practical coaching/teaching sessions will run, where you will be able to put the coaching theory into practice and develop the confidence to deliver sessions in the active sporting environment. Simultaneously, other skills will be acquired based around communication, leadership, teamwork and group management.

In addition, parts of the module will focus on sociology of sport and health related aspects of sport and exercise, referring to the sociological value of sport and how this links to coaching and teaching pedagogy as well as the social impact of the PE curriculum in schools. There will also be coverage of health-related aspects of sport and exercise, showing how sport and exercise can benefit our physical condition and mental wellbeing.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

Lectures will be used as a starting point to initiate further engagement activites around a specific topic area. This will promote a variety of learning opportunities which should appeal to all students. Lectures will therefore form the core material from which to expand knowledge in a variety of directions.

Practical sessions will be used to demonstrate visually and in a hands-on fashion, the coaching and teaching concepts taught in the lecture room. Students will be able to build skills on to the theoretical base, enabling both visual and verbal learners to progress. The holistic methods taught will ensure the devlopment of very competent coaches/teachers.

Tutorial sessions will be used to support the lecture material and allow the students to engage in the material using problem-solving skills and directed learning will be used to develop an understanding beyond the material given in lectures. This will include both exercises set within the lecture and independent tutorial sessions, as well as involving using the web and library resources. Tutorial sessions will also form the bridge between theoretical lecture material and the above practical hands-on sessions, in that tutroials will frequently involve the planning and preparation of practical sessions.

Reflective practice will be heavily employed. Again theoretical knowledge will be presented in lectures, followed by planning of the reflective practice process in tutorials and the practical application within all sports hall sessions.

Learning outcomes

LO1: Appreciate the role of physical activitity and physical competence in society
LO2: Demonstrate an understanding of the essential structures of coaching/teaching and coach development
LO3: Appreciate the structure supporting health related development in sport

Assessment strategy

Assessments have been designed to provide students with a diverse range of tasks that maintain interest and encourage engagement. This breadth also ensures the development of a greater number of key skills pertinent to employability.

The first assessment (001) will be a Class Exam in Teaching Week (10). This will take place in class time and will cover material from the main body of the taught part of the module. This will give students the opportunity to review material which has built week on week and respond to questions posed regarding its detail and context. The exam will test students' recall (with short-answer questions), but also the level of understanding behind some of the sports concepts that have been presented over the module so far (with slightly longer answer questions).

The second assessment (002) will be a Practical Coaching-Teaching demonstration in the University Sports Hall. The students will now be able to show planning and preparation skills in constructing a sports session in the sporting activity of their choice, before delivering the session to their peers. In doing so they will be able to demonstrate the leadership, communication and teaching skills they have learnt over the previous weeks. This will provide valuable expertise to eventually take out into the employment sector.
