This module aims to provide students with the technical background and skills necessary to design and configure and maintain wireless Lans and Wans.
This module focuses on the design of these networks the devices used and their operation, the planning prior to installation and best practices , the implementation of the network design, security provisions and troubleshooting of Wireless LANs.

1. To introduce Wireless LAN set-up & troubleshooting, 802.11 (a, b, and g) technologies, products & solutions.
2. To describe WLAN applications and site surveys;
3. To discuss resilient WLAN products, design, installation, configuration and troubleshooting;
4. To investigate WLAN security issues and emerging wireless technologies;
5. To develop team work and presentation skills in the context of the module curricula;
Prior learning requirements
CT5004 or CT5005 completed
Introduction to Wireless LAN standards, (802.11 (a,b,g and n) )
the operation of the Network Interface Cards, Wireless Radio Technology, Wireless Topologies, Access Points, Bridges, Antennas, Security, Concept of Network Traffic / Queing theory,
Application, Design and Site Survey Preparation,
Site Survey, Troubleshooting Management and Diagnostics.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
Students will develop understanding and practical skills based on weekly lectures, tutorials and supervised workshops.
Appropriate blended learning approaches and technologies, such as, the University’s VLE, simulation tools and laboratory equipment will be used to facilitate and support student learning, in particular, to:
• deliver content;
• encourage active learning;
• provide formative and summative assessments and prompt feedback;
• enhance student engagement and learning experience.
On successful completion of this module students should be able to:
LO1: Describe wireless radio technologies, topologies and IEEE 802.11 wireless standards.
LO2: Configure and install wireless access points, bridges, adapters, and antennae.
LO3: Select appropriate design, installation, configuration and monitoring for WLAN giving due consideration to professional, ethical and legal issues.
LO4: Identify wireless security threats and vulnerabilities;
LO5: Evaluate emerging wireless technologies in a professional and responsible manner while working as a team demonstrating effective communication/inter-personal skills, management and leadership attributes
The module is assessed by three assessment instruments:
Unseen examination (LO1-3) covers basic principles and technical concepts behind wireless networks
Group Casestudy (LO4-5) covers new developments in the field and assess student’s team working ability. Students in a group are expected to submit individual reports if a single coherent group report is not materialised for some reason.
Progress tests (LO1-3) aim to engage the students and act as a barometer of their performance with spot-feedback for adapting their study plans.
Consistent with University policy, formative and summative feedback will be provided at various points throughout the teaching period.
