Module summary
This module is designed to cultivate the mindset, competencies, and adaptability required for a successful career in today’s fast-evolving language services industry, in dialogue with the professional development module. You will gain an understanding of your place within the industry, i.e. its workflows, expectations, and professional practices, equipping you to navigate its demands with confidence, ethical awareness, and a future-oriented approach in a technology-driven professional landscape.
You will explore the practical dimensions of working as a professional translator, with a strong emphasis on workflow management, collaboration in digital environments, and real-world industry norms. Through case studies and scenario-based learning, you will gain insight into the day-to-day operations of freelance and in-house translators, project managers, and language service providers (LSPs), including how projects are managed, how quality is assessed, and how the translation technologies you explored in previous modules shape professional practice.
In this module, you will therefore:
• Enhance your understanding of the roles and responsibilities within the language services industry.
• Apply industry-relevant tools and strategies in simulated professional translation scenarios.
• Analyse and reflect on current practices in project management, quality assurance, and digital collaboration in translation workflows.
• Develop critical awareness of ethical and professional considerations in diverse translation settings.
Through the inclusion of simulated projects and real-world scenarios, this module provides direct training for the level 6 module Holloway Language Services, where you will put all the lessons learned in this module (and others) into practice running your own translation bureau.
Syllabus
This module develops your professional identity and practical competencies in translation through a progression of targeted topics. It begins with outlining key roles, workflows, and operational models within the language services industry (LO1). You then engage in scenario-based simulations to practise workflow and project management, including time planning, client communication, and digital collaboration (LO2; LO3). Hands-on sessions further develop your CAT tools, terminology management, and QA software skills, alongside case studies that explore ethical challenges such as confidentiality breaches, conflicts of interest, and quality assurance failures, encouraging critical engagement with professional codes of conduct (LO4).
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The module will be delivered through teaching techniques underpinned by a learner-centred approach, which is best suited to achieve the aim of reflection on professional practices and challenges in the translation industry. You will have an opportunity to develop your teamwork skills through group projects, and your reflection skills through guided independent work. Blended learning will be realised by providing guidance for independent study on the VLE, and through VLE-based group projects. You will have ample opportunities for self-reflection and peer feedback.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this module, you will be able to:
1. Recognise and critically assess key roles, workflows, and operational models within the language services industry.
2. Apply and exercise decision-making in workflow and project management strategies in simulated translation scenarios, including collaboration with clients, colleagues, and language service providers in digital environments.
3. Identify, critically evaluate and implement industry-standard tools and practices used by freelance and in-house translators, project managers, and LSPs to ensure quality, efficiency, and ethical standards in translation work.
4. Develop and effectively communicate coherent arguments on ethical and professional issues relevant to freelance and in-house translation practice.
