Module summary
The focus of the module is on translation as a product. Students are expected to use the research skills developed in Practical Resources for Translators (TR4054) to check the accuracy of the final product. In view of this, they will be trained to edit their own and others’ translations in terms of style, structure, content and accuracy.

Syllabus
The module content focuses on the development of students’ capacity to check their partners’ and their own translations. For this purpose a range of texts and editing types will be covered (i.e. basic content and stylistic editing; consistency; computer aids to checking; revision parameters and procedures and quality assessment).
Learning Outcomes LO1 - LO3
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
This is an in-class taught module which however entails a mixture of face-to-face and blended learning interactions to keep developing students’ capacity to communicate and exchange work through different mediums. The teaching sessions are very practical consisting of brainstorming tasks and problem-oriented activities. Use of WebLearn is made regularly for the purpose of sharing material, tasks and submitting assignments.
Independent study: Students are expected to expand on the content covered during the teaching sessions through homework tasks which are provided at the end of each teaching session and then discussed the following week.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. Evaluate a variety of texts for the purpose of detecting fallacies of a various nature (e.g. style, grammar, lexis etc.).
2. Apply the tools and resources necessary to edit/improve their final translation to professional standards.
3. Show a basic awareness of the skills required by the professional translation industry.
Assessment strategy
Class Test: An exercise on editing/proofreading to be performed in class and submitted through Weblearn.
The content of the assessment has been designed taking into consideration employers’ demand for candidates who are able to produce translations which comply with quality assurance (QA) standards. The assessment allows students to demonstrate that they have achieved the learning outcomes. Throughout the teaching period students are given tasks which develop their understanding of the relevant proofreading skills that they need to have.
The assessment allows students to demonstrate that they have achieved the learning outcomes by implementing standard proof-reading symbols (British Standards Institution's proof-correction marks) and by proficiently using electronic editing tools.
Formative assessment on students’ homework tasks is given each week. This prepares them for the assessment on which they receive feedback in due time.
