Module summary

The aims of this module are to provide students with an understanding of the (1) internal representations and processes underlying cognition; (2) key theories and models of cognitive psychology and related research in their historical and cultural contexts; (3) how these areas can be scientifically and ethically investigated using appropriate methodologies; and (4) how knowledge of cognitive psychology can be ethically applied to the real world and their relevance to a range of settings. This will help develop students’ employability by providing a basis of knowledge and understanding which will be beneficial in future work and training (e.g. understanding reasoning and factors affecting decision making). This module also fosters students’ ability to critically and academically evaluate theoretical arguments.

Learning Outcomes LO 1 - 3

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module is delivered through a variety of teaching and learning methods. A combination of group and individual activities will take place within a framework of lectures, seminars and workshops. Supplementary guided learning via weblearn and self-managed private study will be provided where appropriate. For PDP development, students will learn about the impact of cognition and how it is ethically applied in a variety of real world situations. They will also learn about the design and conduct of experimental research using different paradigm and platforms. The module content is aligned with the QAA subject benchmark statement for Psychology.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module students will be able to:
1. possess systematic in-depth knowledge and critical awareness of a range of core topic areas and related research in cognitive psychology;
2. have comprehensive knowledge and critical awareness of a range of different research methods used in cognitive psychology;
3. be able to summarise and evaluate theoretical developments and ethical issues in cognitive psychology in the light of empirical evidence.

Assessment strategy

An MCT and a written coursework assignment will assess the breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding of the material covered in the module. Formative assessments will be used throughout the module to help students to prepare for the summative assessments. Students must obtain a minimum average grade of 40% across both assessments to pass the module.
