Module summary
Students will continue to learn Arabic and will become confident elementary users, towards CEFR A2 level. Students will learn to use the language in familiar contexts through practical class activities, focusing on authentic language use. The module develops students’ control of grammatical structures and vocabulary, as well as focusing on reading, writing, listening, speaking, communicative and pronunciation skills. Students will also study the cultures of Arabic speaking countries.
This is a 15 credit module taught on a semester basis. The module is assessed by two in class tests and an oral presentation. The course is structured around class time, independent learning and guided Weblearn materials.

Completion of OAL071 OR A1 competence
Module aims
The aims of this module are:
• To develop students’ linguistic competences in Arabic for all skills towards an elementary level (level A2 of the Common European Framework of Reference);
• To develop appropriate language learning strategies to encourage effective independent learning of the target language;
• To develop an understanding of the cultural contexts in which the language is used
• To enhance student employability and transferable skills
Syllabus
The course is structured around class time, independent learning and guided Weblearn materials. Indicative contents will include:
• Development of receptive skills (listening and reading) in Arabic
• Development of productive skills (speaking and writing)
• Development of vocabulary and lexis
• Further acquisition of simple grammatical structures
• Second language acquisition and language learning strategies
Learning and teaching
This course will follow a blended learning approach. Students will study Arabic during class and extend and consolidate this with the use of WebLearn and other online and paper based resources. They will develop independent learning skills and language learning strategies. Students will work together and alone in and out of class and they will receive teacher and peer feedback to enable them to reflect on their learning.
Learning outcomes
The learning outcomes of this module are calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.
On completing this module, students will be able to:

Understand simple language in familiar contexts and situations
Interact in a simple way, ask and answer questions on familiar topics
Produce short utterances on familiar topics and situations
Respond to and initiate questions and statements on familiar topics

Write short notes and messages, fill in forms with personal details
Understand short simple written texts and find specific information in everyday material (board messages, notices and personal communications)

Extend their range of vocabulary and phrases related to familiar topics and situations
Extend their control of a range of grammatical structures
Assessment strategy
The module will be assessed through an in class test, a listening test and an oral test. The in class test will assess learning outcomes 2 and 3, the listening will assess learning outcomes 1 and 2, and the oral test will assess learning outcomes 1 and 3.
