Module summary

In this module students will develop proficiency Spanish language skills and work towards becoming independent users of the target language. (CEFR Level B2 – C1)  Students will learn how to use Spanish in a wide range of contexts, with appropriate register. The course further extends the accurate use of grammatical structures and vocabulary. It also focuses on intercultural communication skills and cultural aspects of Spanish speaking countries.
The course is structured around class time, independent learning and guided WebLearn materials.

Prior learning requirements

Completion of OSL077 OR B2 competence in Spanish

Module aims

The aims of this module are:

•  To improve students’ linguistic competence in Spanish in all skills towards a  proficiency level (level  B2/C1 of the Common European Framework of Reference)
• To further develop appropriate language learning strategies to encourage effective independent learning of Spanish;
• To focus on the cultural contexts of Spanish speaking countries
• To enhance student employability and transferable skills


• Development of a range of listening skills and sub-skills in Spanish
• Production of a wide range of texts in different genres and registers
• Further development of accurate and appropriate oral skills
• Further extension of a wide variety of lexis
• Editing and proofreading to extend accurate use of grammatical structures and lexis
• Development of fluency and appreciation of register and genre

Learning and teaching

Learning and teaching strategies will be delivered through a blended learning approach. Learners will actively participate in individual and group activities in class and independently, using online resources and tools available on Weblearn, as well as paper based materials. They will receive teacher and peer feedback to enable them to reflect on their learning

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of this module are calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages.  By the end of the module students should be able to:

• write with clarity and precision, in an appropriate register on a variety of topics in different contexts and with different aims
• Produce writing which shows a command of the language and the development of personal style

• Present an agreed and researched topic for a particular audience and purpose
• Demonstrate fluency and accuracy in the target language with a wide range of vocabulary
• Use a wide range of cohesive devices to produce clear, coherent discourse

Assessment strategy

The module will be assessed through course work an oral test. The course work will assess learning outcomes 1 and the oral test will assess learning outcomes 2.
