Module summary

The module is highly practical and is designed to prepare students for real world networks. Troubleshooting Cisco IP Networks teaches students the knowledge and skills that will enable the troubleshooting of complex enterprise routed and switched networks.
Students use their skill to troubleshoot the communication on large-scale data networks using Cisco equipment and extend their research skills. Students will cover various network diagnostic commands, switch and VLAN troubleshooting, EIGRP, OSPF and BGP troubleshooting, IPv4 and IPv6 addressing and routing issues, troubleshooting of wireless networks and various network security protocol related issues. A good trouble-shooter can save time and mitigate costs incurred by downtime.

Establishing network performance baseline.
Troubleshooting methods.
Structured troubleshooting.
Basic Switching and Routing Process and Effective IOS Troubleshooting Commands.
Using Specialized Troubleshooting tools.
Various trouble tickets for: IPv4/IPv6 Services and the Data Plane, Integrating Multiple IGPs, Integrating IGPs with BGP, Continuum of Network Technologies, Complex Environments.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

A variety of approaches will be adopted. A problem / laboratory based learning approach will be adopted to satisfy the aims and objectives and hence the learning outcomes.   Formal lectures will be further strengthened via hands-on individual case studies. The module concentrates on troubleshooting methods and techniques. Students are introduced to detection and remediation of faults that can occur on OSI Layers 1 to 7

Learning outcomes

On successfully completing the work covered in this module, the student should be able to:
LO1. Demonstrate in-depth understanding of troubleshooting tools and methods using specialized diagnosing tools/methods to identify the problem related to various aspect of a complex network.
LO2. Critically analyse, identify and solve common network problems at OSI layers 1, 2, 3 and 7 and take relevant steps to rectify a network problem by using appropriated IoS command.

LO3. Justify and evaluate the proposed solution/s.
LO4. Work effectively in a small team in responsible manner and with professional commitment to diagnose any network problems and troubleshoot a small to medium to large Enterprise network in a simulated lab environment.

Assessment strategy

Time to time personal formative feedback on practical work is provided in the laboratory hours by the lab tutor. Students are encouraged to keep a logbook and record the summary of their practical work and comments from the tutor for reflective learning. Generic summative feedback is provided on case study report in a special lab session or via WebLearn. Students have opportunity to see module team during their office hours for quick discussion and guidance. Moreover, one to one customised summative feedback on final examinations during resit and revision session
