Module summary

The aim of this module explore the responsibilities, tensions and factors relating to safeguarding children and young people within a youth justice context. Although legal and practice based frameworks will be discussed, at the heart of the module will be helping the student understand the wide range of factors impacting child safety

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module comprises of 10 weeks taught workshops supported by guided learning in the form of suggested reading available on weblearn. All workshops will be recorded and lecture slides and recordings will be available on line.

The workshops will combine the theoretically basis for the national standards for youth justice services with the opportunity for students to apply this knowledge to historical cases. Each workshop will contain a group work element where students discuss particular standards in light of a scenario presented in the workshop and have their application of the standard’s peer reviewed.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the module, students will be able to:

1. Understand the core principles behind safeguarding
2. Recognise the various factors involved in safeguarding and understand the different roles and responsibilities
3. Identify key safeguarding concerns affecting children within the youth justice system
4. Apply safeguarding principles to a range of issues relating to children’s lives
5. Assess the effectiveness of safeguarding practice in supporting children within the youth justice system.
6. Show competence in regards to the Standards for children in the justice system and relevant areas of the Youth Justice Skills and Knowledge Matrix at Induction and Foundation level (YJSAKM -I22/I29/I32-33/I36-37/I40-44/F59/F6/F41/F47-48/F66-70/F72)

Assessment strategy

The module will have a 3000 word essay which will allow students to demonstrate that they can their ability to explain, apply and critique safeguarding principles to a number of factors impacting children within the youth justice system
