Module summary
This module encompasses a holistic approach to the prevention, assessment and management of sports injuries in a wide range of populations (including those with specific considerations). Clinical reasoning will be developed through the understanding and application of examination and assessment techniques, as well as a variety of issues in the sporting context.
This module aims to provide the students with a level of knowledge and understanding appropriate to a Masters level Sports Therapist. This module will enable students to develop a critical understanding of issues in sporting environments and application of their skills to special populations. This will enhance their ability to apply theory to practise and improve their employability.
Prior learning requirements
ST7050
Syllabus
Theoretical basis and practical application of differential diagnostic testing including specificity, sensitivity and reliability of clinical tests and outcome measures. LO 2
Case study analysis including differential diagnosis evaluation LO 1, 2, 3,
Sports Therapy considerations for specific populations LO 1, 3
Contextual issues in Sports Therapy LO 1, 3
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The learning opportunities for this module include a variety of techniques to engage students with the multidisciplinary nature of Sports Therapy. Scheduled L&T activities include formal lectures, case study seminars, workshops, group activities and role-play activities. This will be interspersed with guest speakers in niche areas of Sports Therapy to develop students understanding of the context of their profession. There will be a number of opportunities for peer interaction and reflective learning through the holistic approach and use of real-life case study analysis. All of these methods will be supported through materials on WebLearn.
Learning outcomes
1. Critically evaluate the holistic approach to prevention and management of sports injuries in specific populations, with consideration to related disciplines
2. Effectively select, utilise and critique differentiation tests and outcome measures in the context of sports therapy
3. Demonstrate systematic and critical interpretation of the theoretical basis of Sports Therapy to contextualised sporting situations
Assessment strategy
Assessment instruments consist of a multi-station OSCE examination worth 100% (1 hour in total). This assesses knowledge aquisition, clinical reasoning, applied practical skills and critical thinking in a case-study based situation. This assessment allows students to demonstrate their ability to interpret unseen information and make appropriate decisions in a time retricted environment, preparing them appropriately for the placement module.
Additionally, students are expected to achieve 20 hours of observational placement hours which will contribute to the 200 required hours within ST7W34.
