Module summary
This module aims to do the following:
1. To provide a sound understanding of legal research methods from primary sources.
2. To develop skills of legal analysis from primary sources.
3. To develop written communication skills in a legal setting.

2.2 Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent.

There is no set syllabus for this module. It is a set of skills which are taught pervasively through all the taught modules on the course.
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
There are no specific teaching hours for this module, which is taught pervasively through the Foundations of Law modules.
Students will be given the opportunity to undertake a formative version of the assessment, on which they will be given written and/or oral feedback.
Learning outcomes
Having completed this module, students will be able to do the following:
1. Analyse a judgment in terms of its ratio decidendi and obiter dicta.
2. Summarise a judgment, identifying the facts pertinent to the decision.
3. Appreciate the importance of a judgment in terms of its precedential value.
4. Identify and summarise the effect of a statute.
5. Analyse the effect of a statute in relation to its supposed purpose.
6. Suggest amendments to a statute which would make it more effective or clear.
