Module summary
The purpose of this module is to provide students with knowledge and skills generally expected of a graduate in accounting. The module will build on both the conceptual and applied aspects of the subject, acquired by students in their prior learning. You will learn how to account for more complex transactions, and to analyse and interpret financial statements. You will learn the techniques required to prepare and present financial statements for business combinations comprising simple groups of companies, which conform to International Financial Reporting Standards.
You will apply contemporary information and current communication technology for the acquisition, analysis and communication of information.
You will understand and critically evaluate the impact of AI on Accounting.
Relevant accounting software and external resource persons will be utilised on the module to enhance students’ employability.

Syllabus
1. Contemporary issues in accounting (LO1)
2. Accounting for specialised transactions including financial instruments, leasing, foreign currency transactions, employee benefits and share-based payments, fair values etc.(LO2)
3. Preparation of consolidated financial statements including an associate (LO3)
4. Analysing and interpreting the financial statements of entities, including not-for-profit entities (LO4)
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
Scheduled teaching activity is a weekly 2-hour lecture and a 1-hour seminar. Independent study is supported by practice questions, case studies, past exam questions and published academic and professional articles. Online resources will be widely used in the teaching and learning of the module.
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:-
1. Critically appraise contemporary issues in Accounting, including the impact of AI
2. Apply and appraise the requirements of International Financial Reporting Standards for complex transactions including financial instruments, related parties, foreign exchange, grants, lease etc. etc
3. Prepare a consolidated financial statement for a simple group (parent and one subsidiary and associate)
4. Critically analyse, interpret and make appropriate recommendations on the financial statements of for-profit and not-for-profit entities.
