Module summary

The aim of this module is to introduce you to a range of Specific Learning Differences (SLDs), including autism spectrum disorder (ASD); attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); and dyslexia. You will learn how these learning differences are diagnosed and how they impact cognition, behaviour, and education. You will develop a critical understanding of the theoretical and evidential basis of diagnosis and treatment methods for different SLDs. You will have opportunities to consider the lived experience of individuals with SLDs and significant others (e.g., relatives, teachers), recognising that an individual’s strengths and difficulties will present differently and may change depending on the task or the environment. You will also develop essential skills in ethical and inclusive practice when working with people with SLDs. The knowledge and skills developed in the module will help to prepare you for further study and employment in various professional contexts.

Syllabus

Topics covered in the module will be drawn from: Specific Learning Differences; autism spectrum disorder (ASD); attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD); dyslexia; individual differences within SLDs; diagnostic methods; implications of diagnosis; ethical and inclusive practice when working with people diagnosed with SLDs.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The learning objectives will be achieved through a combination of lectures, interactive workshops and seminars, supplementary guided web-based learning, and self-managed independent study. Formative assessments and group work in seminars will provide you with constructive tutor and feedback. You will be encouraged to reflect on your learning throughout the module and to take responsibility for your own learning including identifying developmental needs.

Learning outcomes

On successful completion of this module, you will be able to:
1. Explain the key characteristics and diagnosis of SLDs and critically engage with the theory and research on SLDs.
2. Evaluate diagnostic methods and interventions for SLDs with reference to research evidence.
3. Appreciate the implications of being diagnosed with SLDs for the individual and significant others, including awareness of ethical and inclusive practices.
