Module summary

The module examines the history of housing policy in the UK, focussing in particular on the shift to neo-liberal housing policies from the 1980s. Key contemporary housing issues and the key causes of the current ‘housing crisis’ in London and the UK are examined.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

 Key issues will be introduced through lectures. Students will discuss good practice and other issues in small groups during seminars and participatory workshops. Weblearn resources will be used extensively.

Learning outcomes

1. Demonstrate an understanding of housing policy in the UK throughout the twentieth and twenty-first centuries
2. Explain the impact of the different forms of state intervention in the housing market in the UK over the twentieth and twenty-first centuries
3. Identify and critically examine key contemporary housing issues and the key causes of the current ‘housing crisis’
4. Critically evaluate contemporary housing policy

Assessment strategy

 Assessment 1 - the literature review will require students to summarise a key course (core) text. The text will focus on a topic relating to a key aspect of contemporary housing policy.

Assessment 2 - the essay will require students to demonstrate an understanding of and critically reflect upon key housing policies and issues and the underlying causes of the housing crisis.
