Module summary
A highly creative module in which students devise and develop concepts for their film and TV projects. The module will give an introduction to the commissioning process and will include input from industry professionals.
Students will be required to research, pitch and develop treatments, storyboards and scripts following industry guidelines and legal frameworks.
Students will learn about approaches to short film, drama and documentary storytelling via screenings, discussion and practice.
The module will provide an insight into the paperwork and planning required for different production roles.
Personal development, reflection and evaluation on the productions will also be a key element.
This module is studied alongside and in combination with MD4001 Film and TV Practice.
Syllabus
The module will introduce students to a range of methods of communicating their film and TV concepts in the correct formats. They will develop these crucial skills through case studies, exercises and coursework. LO1, LO2, LO3
This paperwork and planning will contribute towards the practical productions carried out on the practice-based module MD4001 (Film and TV Practice) and will enable teams to communicate well with each other. LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4
Critical evaluation and reflection will be an integral part of class discussion and coursework. LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
Learning hours comprise face-to-face and virtual contact hours plus self-managed and directed learning and reflecting through group discussion on projects in workshops. Weblearn is used for blended learning. Students will meet to develop and produce their productions both inside and outside of class time.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module the student will be able to demonstrate:
LO1: Understanding of how to communicate a concept via a pitch, treatment, storyboard or script.
LO2: How to convey a narrative using drama and documentary techniques.
LO3: Understanding of professional practice such as legal, ethical and safety guidelines and paperwork for specific production roles.
LO4: A basic level of analytical, reflective and critical skills. For example, by being able to write an evaluation of their work.
Assessment strategy
By the end of the module students will have completed a workbook consisting of the paperwork and planning documents relating to each of their practical projects.
They will gain regular detailed formative feedback across the year on their output and performance and will have the opportunity to refine their workbook for the final submission at the end of the module.
Assessment will be based on 100% coursework.
Bibliography
Each student group will have access to online resources, including Weblearn and Google groups. These are seen as forums for sharing information, discussion and learning.
In addition, reading and film lists will direct students to material that supports and broadens learning for particular groups and particular projects.
