Module summary

In this module, students will continue to develop their language skills to become partly autonomous users of French.  Students will learn how to use French in a range of contexts through practical class activities focusing on authentic language use. The course covers grammatical structures, vocabulary and skills as well as looking at intercultural communication skills and cultural aspects of French speaking countries. The course is structured around class time, autonomous learning and guided WebLearn materials. The module is adaptable to the language abilities of students and can be taught to students studying in different years.

Completion of OFL072 OR equivalent competence

Syllabus

The course is structured around class time, autonomous learning and guided WebLearn materials. Indicative contents will include:

• Further development receptive skills (listening, reading) LO1, LO3
• Further development of writing skills LO3
• Further development of speaking skills and fluency LO2
• Extension and expansion of accurate use of and understanding of a range of lexis LO3
• Further development of grammatical accuracy LO1, LO2, LO3

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

In this module learning and teaching strategies will be delivered through a blended learning approach. Learners will actively participate in individual and group activities in class and autonomously, using online resources and tools available on WebLearn, as well as paper -based materials. They will receive teacher and peer feedback to enable them to reflect on their learning.

Learning outcomes

The learning outcomes of this module are calibrated to the Common European Framework of Reference for Languages. By the end of the module students should be able to:

1. Speaking and Listening

• understand clear practical messages, announcements and conversations in French  and interact and express opinions on various simple topics

• ask/answer questions to simple statements maintaining the flow of conversation

2. Writing  and Reading

• read and understand simple texts describing experiences/impressions

• write formal/informal texts using adequate grammar and vocabularyv

Assessment strategy

The module will be assessed through a reading and writing test and an oral test. The reading and writing test will assess learning outcome 3 while the oral test will assess learning outcome 1 and 2.

• Formative assessment supports students in developing for summative assessment.

• Feedback on assessment is timely, constructive and developmental.

• Processes for marking assessments and for moderating marks are clearly articulated and consistently operated by those involved in the assessment process.
