Module summary
This module provides input on key issues of English language literacy which are directly related to employability and professional and academic communication (Common European Framework of Reference B1). Students compile a portfolio of their work on chosen tasks from the module content and receive formative and summative feedback. They also sit a class test and do a presentation on a relevant topic. The module is adaptable to the language abilities of students and can be taught to students studying in different years.
Syllabus
Notional – functional contexts in which language is investigated include: LO1, LO2, LO3, LO4
• preparing personal information for job applications, interviews, small group meetings for specific purposes, addressing large groups
• planning correspondence and responding to it: email etiquette, report writing and writing for specific purposes, academic writing
• public debate and presenting a point of view;
Reading and writing – students will complete the following tasks: LO1, LO2
• write answers to academic tasks
• write an effective covering letter for a given job role
• write an agenda and take simple minutes of a meeting using given information
• edit written texts, including web copy, for accuracy and expression
• reply to correspondence in appropriate register on given issues
• complete a report with given information
Speaking – students will complete the following tasks: LO3, LO4
• take part in formal group debate on a given issue
• give a presentation on an agreed issue using appropriate visual aids
Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity
The module is delivered by blended learning: classes are supported with on-line tasks and other resources. A task based/problem based approach is used. Students work both in small groups and individually and have opportunities for reflection following feedback sessions and tutorials throughout the course. Students are responsible for reading widely and investigating the context of their tasks; they are responsible for taking an active part in class and seminar and integrating formative feedback and reflection into their final submissions.

On successful completion of the modules, students will be able to:
1. Write clear, concise and accurate text for a variety of academic and workplace purposes
2. Proofread, summarise and edit academic and professional documents
3. Organise and present information for a professional and/or academic context
4. Participate in formal and informal presentations, seminars, meetings and debates
