Module summary
This module explores text typology and specific aspects of Source Text analysis. The module focuses on the translation stages and the mechanisms underlying these stages. It introduces students to techniques for a successful source text analysis which will help them to anticipate translation problems. Students will be familiarised with the relevance of extra and intra-textual features of the source text to the translation process. They will be required to use appropriate meta-language to describe and discuss various anticipated translation problems in a variety of source texts and source forms.

The syllabus of this module will include:
- Stages in the translation process
- Anticipation of translation problems
- Pre-translation analysis: text typology as well as intra-textual and extra-textual features

This module will focus on the following strategies:
1. Materials provided on WebLearn are expected to be read by students prior to attending weekly sessions and seminar activities.
2. There will be formative in-class activities which will allow students to work collaboratively with their peers and lecturer.
3. Autonomous learning will also be encouraged as regular and independent homework is expected throughout the semester.
Regular attendance to ALL lectures and seminars is compulsory.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of this module, students will be able to:
1. analyse source texts in terms of their origin and production, relying on specific theoretical models of analysis widely used in translation studies,
2. identify typical intra-textual and extra-textual features, using appropriate meta-language,
3. demonstrate an awareness of the writing characteristics found in various source texts and prepare for an adequate rendering into the target text.
4. act inclusively, collaboratively and in a socially responsible manner.
