Module summary

This module aims to provide an introduction to human anatomy and basic biomechanics of human movement. It is a broadly-based introduction to anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and human movement, and the isolation of specific muscle groups that produce these movements. This module has a bias towards the specific interests of those studying for sports-related degrees. You will have the ability to learn and explore the anatomy of the musculoskeletal system and human movement of the lower limb, upper limb and trunk.
Thus, among other topics, you will learn to identify and name structures such as bones, joints, muscles and other relevant soft tissue structures found in the human body using appropriate terminology. You will also learn to describe the function of these structures, and understand their relevance to sport and exercise.

The teaching methods include lectures, seminars and practicals. The seminar sessions involve group discussions based on directed learning, which is supported by material available on Weblearn.

Balance of independent study and scheduled teaching activity

The module is devoted to a practical appreciation of human anatomy of the musculoskeletal system, and underpinning basic biomechanics to be able to describe fundamental human movement.  The material is delivered by a combination of lecture, seminar and practical sessions. Seminar sessions will involve group discussions based on directed learning. Worksheets will be used each week to guide independent study. 

Guided independent study is supported by material on Weblearn.  Anatomy teaching benefits from availability of specialised software. Students are encouraged to reflect on their learning throughout the module and particularly in periodic independent-study weeks.

Students’ study responsibilities are articulated in the Student Charter which is available via the University Web site.

Learning outcomes

LO1: Recall a knowledge of the gross anatomy of the human skeletal and muscular systems.
LO2: Identify and label key anatomical structures using appropriate anatomical terminology.
LO3: Recall and describe basic movements of the human body, including osteokinematics.

Assessment strategy

Achievement of the learning outcomes is assessed through two written unseen examinations.
The lower limb anatomy written unseen examination will include the lower limb anatomy and human movement. This examination will contribute 50% towards the module overall mark. It assesses Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3.
This first assessment takes place within class time, as an in-class test.
The upper limb anatomy written unseen examination will include the upper limb anatomy and human movement. This examination will contribute 50% towards the module overall mark. It assesses Learning Outcomes 1, 2 and 3.
Each examination will last 30 minutes. An aggregate mark of 40% or more is required to pass this module. Formative assessment opportunities are provided on-line.
